Independent Director

The ABER Group is looking to grow with the addition of an Independent Director to sit upon the ABER Trustees Limited Board. Based in Aberystwyth, we are an employee-owned company with over 35 years experience making monitoring instrumentation for the brewing and biotech markets. Main Purpose

The Independent Director will sit on the ABER Trustees Limited board, alongside the Management Director and the Employee Representative Director. They will work closely with the ABER Group Employee Senedd to ensure that the Employee Owners are always represented and will challenge ABER subsidiary Boards on a regular basis. The Independent Director will bring external experience to ABER, helping us grow whilst adhering to our Ethos & Values and Guiding Purpose, and ensuring our existing culture is protected. 

The ABER Group Employee Senedd is responsible for the welfare of all ABER employee owners, regardless of which subsidiary they may be employed by. The Senedd is made up of representatives from the subsidiary Employee Councils. The Employee Councils are subsidiary-level Employee groups which are responsible for their subsidiary’s issues and employees. They report to the ABER Group Employee Senedd.

The successful candidate would need to be an independent thinker and bring external perspectives to ABER. The post holder will have a sound understanding of employee ownership and the differences this can bring to an organisation.


  • To challenge the business to promote the success of ABER Group for the benefit of all the employee owners.
  • Ensure the business of ABER Trustees Ltd is conducted in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide insight into ABER’s strategy ensuring alignment across the Group.
  • Ensure that ABER is adhering to its Governance documents, and periodically review and suggest amendments.
  • Provide support and independent advice to the Employee Senedd ensuring that members are performing their duties fully.
  • To promote, protect and model ABER’s Culture, Ethos & Values, and Guiding Purpose.
  • Work across ABER to ensure risk levels are well defined and managed.
  • Assure that the Employee Senedd (and additional ABER Councils) are holding the different Boards within ABER to account.
  • Avoid any conflicts of interest.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required


  • Experience of Senior Management or Director level duties with a clear understanding of the responsibilities the role carries.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of good corporate governance principles.
  • An appreciation of the benefits and differences of Employee Ownership.
  • Independent thinker with the ability to bring an external perspective to the organisation.
  • Have a strategic mindset with a commitment to develop a growing international business and its people.
  • Experience in a growing medium-sized business.
  • Familiarity with ensuring a business operates within its Purpose and Values.
  • Commercial confidence and familiarity with business finance, ideally including experience of acquisition and merger transactions.
  • An effective listener and communicator, able to hold individuals accountable.
  • Experience working with multi-layered/structured organisations, groups and subsidiaries.


  • Knowledge and experience of ABER’s core business markets.
  • A member of the Employee Ownership Association.
